Why Thermory? Uncompromising Grading Standards

At Thermory, quality starts long before thermal modification—it begins with how we source and grade our lumber.

The highest recognized hardwood grade is FAS (First and Seconds), which allows for some defects within each board (specifically requiring boards to be just 83-1/3% clear wood). But for us, that’s not enough.

We’ve developed our own, more rigorous grading standard that we call: FAS 1 Cut.

This custom, proprietary grade goes beyond traditional FAS by requiring long, clear sections and limiting any allowable defects to the very ends of the board—never on the face. In many cases, we go even further, sourcing completely clear material whenever possible.

As Eric Britson, Product Engineer, explains, the goal is simple: “We’re always aiming for clear-grade material—single-cut boards with minimal to no defects. If that’s not available, our FAS 1 Cut specification ensures the usable portion is still completely clean.”

Thermory is Built for Performance and Efficiency

This higher standard doesn’t just improve appearance; it fundamentally changes how the product performs in the field.

By starting with better raw material, we reduce waste throughout the thermal modification and milling process. The result is a more consistent, stable board that’s easier to work with from start to finish.

Matt Stansell, Building Products Director, puts it this way:
“We’re not just thinking about how the board looks when it leaves our facility—we’re thinking about how it performs on the jobsite. Cleaner lumber means less cutting around defects and a more efficient install.”

Thermory is 100% Usable. No Compromises.

Most importantly, our grading standards ensure that every board you receive is fully usable.

No surprises. No wasted material. No compromises.

As Mark Challinor, Thermory USA CFO, explains: “Thermory stands apart from others because of our unwillingness to compromise. Every single board we sell has been inspected several times and is 100% usable. We start with the same FAS grade raw material as everyone else, but then we reject over 15% of it during our production process to deliver a final product that is completely clear of defects. This standard is not available anywhere else.”

Thermory’s Elevated Grading Standards and JEM Joint

This commitment to maximizing yield and eliminating waste is exactly what led to the development of our Jointed End Matched (JEM) boards.

Because when every board is clear—and every inch is usable—you can design a system where nothing goes to waste.

Together, our elevated grading standards and JEM technology reflect a simple philosophy: make every board count. By starting with better raw material and engineering it for maximum yield, Thermory delivers a product that minimizes waste, streamlines installation, and performs beautifully for years to come. It’s not just higher quality—it’s a smarter, more efficient way to build.
