Beat the Winter Blues with a Thermory Sauna

As temperatures drop and daylight dwindles, winter has a way of creeping into our routines—and our mood. In the U.S., about 5% of adults experience Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) each year, and as many as 10–20% may suffer from milder “winter blues” symptoms.

For many with SAD, symptoms persist for around 40% of the year.  But winter doesn’t have to feel like something to endure. What if your home became a retreat of warmth, restoration, and daily reprieve? A home sauna offers one of the best ways to feel better during the coldest months. Whether you’re recharging after a cold commute or warming up after snow shoveling, regular sauna sessions support immunity, circulation, stress relief—and, importantly, mood.

At Thermory, we embrace a European sauna mindset rooted in Finnish wellness traditions—where heat, ritual, and recovery are part of everyday life. Heat isn’t a luxury. It’s a tool for feeling better.

Note: Our Finnish-style saunas heat the air to 150–195°F using a heater filled with stones, creating intense, enveloping heat — and when you add water for löyly, the steam boosts both warmth and sensation. Infrared saunas, by contrast, use IR panels that heat the body directly, not the air, so the room stays a bit cooler at 120–150°F while still producing a sweat.  So if you’re looking for true heat and a deep sweat – you’ve come to the right place!

Here are our tips on creating your home sauna retreat—and how sauna use can help your brain and body feel better this winter.

The Science: How Saunas Improve Mood & Mental Well-Being

  1. Saunas increase endorphins — your body’s natural mood lifters.

Heat exposure triggers the release of endorphins, which promote relaxation, reduce pain perception, and create a sense of well-being. This biochemical boost is one reason people report feeling emotionally lighter and more peaceful after a sauna.

  1. Heat exposure boosts serotonin and dopamine.

When your core temperature rises, it influences neurotransmitter activity. Research suggests that heat stress can increase serotonin (linked to stable mood) and dopamine (tied to reward and motivation), both of which are common targets in antidepressant therapy.

  1. Saunas activate the parasympathetic (“rest and recover”) nervous system.

After the initial heat stress, your body switches into a recovery mode:

  • Heart rate slows

  • Stress hormone levels drop

  • You enter a calming physiological state

This is similar to what happens in meditation or deep relaxation, helping your mind settle and reset.

  1. Saunas lower cortisol (your main stress hormone).

Multiple studies show that cortisol decreases after sauna use. Lower cortisol helps:

  • Reduce stress

  • Stabilize mood

  • Improve sleep quality (which itself supports emotional balance)

  1. Heat triggers the release of BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor).

Sauna use mimics certain effects of exercise by stimulating BDNF, a protein involved in brain health, neuroplasticity, and mood regulation. Higher BDNF levels are linked to better mental resilience and lower risk of depression.

  1. Improved circulation supports clearer thinking.

Sauna sessions raise your heart rate (often to 100–150 bpm), increasing blood flow to the brain. That means more oxygen and nutrients for your neurons, which can improve mental clarity and reduce cognitive fatigue.

  1. Saunas help regulate sleep — a major factor in mood.

When your body cools down after a sauna, it triggers a natural drop in core temperature, similar to what happens before sleep. This process helps you:

  • Fall asleep faster

  • Enjoy deeper, more restorative sleep

Better sleep = better emotional resilience.

  1. Reduced inflammation may also play a role in mood improvement.

Chronic inflammation is strongly linked to depression. Heat therapy has been shown to lower inflammatory markers (like CRP), which helps support a healthier internal environment and contributes to better mood regulation.

What Makes a Sauna Truly Durable (Especially for Winter)?

Not all saunas are built for the long haul—especially in cold climates where temperature swings and moisture matters.

Thermory saunas are crafted from our premium thermally modified wood, a natural process that uses only heat and steam to produce wood with exceptional dimensional stability and rot resistance. This makes them ideal for regular, heavy use.

Our saunas include:

  • Tongue-and-groove construction (prevents warping)

  • Extra thick 8mm tempered glass doors (providing better insulation than most on the market)

  • Ventilation systems designed for consistent heat flow

These design choices improve both comfort and lifespan—and they come standard in every Thermory sauna.
