At Thermory, we offer three distinct Alder modifications—Natural, Medium, and Intense—each designed for specific uses, aesthetics, and durability. Here’s everything you need to know about these modifications and how they can enhance your sauna experience.
1. What exactly are the differences in Thermory’s 3 Alder modifications?

Natural Alder: This is untreated wood, ideal for indoor use, and often used for trim or interior accents in saunas.
Medium Modification: This Alder is thermally modified to a peak temperature of approximately 374°F. It offers enhanced dimensional stability and a rich, warm color, making it perfect for interior sauna use.
Intense Modification: The most heat-treated version, reaching temperatures of approximately 419°F or higher. This modification enhances the wood’s durability and makes it suitable for outdoor use.
2. What is the purpose of having a Medium modified Alder?
The Medium modification is designed to provide dimensional stability and desired color change for Alder wood, as it becomes more stable and less prone to warping. However, it does not have the additional biological durability needed for outdoor use, which is why it is recommended only for indoor use.
3. What are the benefits of the Medium modification?
Enhanced Stability: It improves the wood’s resistance to changes in humidity and temperature, which is crucial for indoor environments like saunas.
Aesthetic Appeal: The wood takes on a richer, deeper tone that enhances the sauna’s overall look, making it warm and inviting.
Sustainability: As the wood undergoes thermal modification, it becomes more durable without the need for chemicals or preservatives.
4. Is Medium-modified Alder suitable for outdoor use?
No, Medium Thermo Alder is not suggested for outdoor use. Our process of medium thermal modification improves its stability and color for indoor environments but does not provide the level of biological durability required to withstand outdoor conditions like rain or harsh sunlight. For outdoor use, the Intense Thermo Alder is recommended, as it is heated to a higher temperature for added durability.
5. What solutions are we providing by having three modifications—Natural, Medium, and Intense?
Thermory’s three Alder modifications help solve different challenges related to both the aesthetic preferences and functional needs of sauna users.
According to Bobby Reid, Thermory Sauna Sales Manager:
“Our new Dark (Intense) Thermo Alder sauna lumber is turning heads with its deep, rich color perfectly on trend—because let’s face it, nobody ever said, ‘I wish my sauna looked less sleek and stylish.’ The different modifications offer versatility for varying customer needs. Whether you’re going for a lighter, natural finish or a deeper, more modern look, we’ve got you covered.”
6. Why is Alder so popular for sauna materials?

Alder, also known as Black Alder, is a perennial deciduous tree found in Europe, southwestern Asia, and northern Africa. Its natural reddish tones, pleasant texture, and resistance to overheating make it a top choice for sauna interiors. Alder is hardy, water-repellent, and perfect for creating an inviting atmosphere in your sauna.
As Bobby Reid puts it:
“The beauty of Alder and its three versions (Natural, Medium, and Intense) lies in their aesthetic appeal and dimensional stability. Thermo Alder and Thermo Aspen are the 2 largest volume species sold in North America for sauna.
For residential saunas, it’s primarily about creating a beautiful and inviting space, while for commercial saunas, it’s about balancing aesthetics with the long-term durability needed for high-traffic environments.”
7. How does the color of the wood affect the sauna’s appearance?
Light-colored woods, like Natural Alder, can make a small sauna feel larger and brighter, creating an open, airy atmosphere. Natural alder accounts for around 36% of sales world wide in sauna material, and quickly gaining popularity. On the other hand, darker tones, like those found in Intense Thermo Alder, create a more intimate, cozy feel, often preferred for larger or more luxurious saunas.

Bobby Reid notes, “Thermo Alder has a mid-tone brown color that North Americans especially love. It’s often compared to the look of cedar, but with a bit more warmth and a modern flair.”
