Welcome to Your Sauna Sanctuary
Your sauna is more than just a physical space—it’s where you reconnect with yourself and find peace. So sauna maintenance and care isn’t just about preserving the wood or the accessories; it’s about nurturing a space that brings you comfort and relaxation. By taking the time to care for it, you ensure it remains a soothing escape, always ready to support your wellness journey. Whether you’re fine-tuning your sauna’s design or perfecting your routine, remember that every detail contributes to a more enriching experience. Invest in your well-being by making your sauna a true sanctuary—a reflection of the peace and balance you seek.
Simple Steps for During Use
Keeping your sauna up to the task is much easier than you might think (easier than a hot tub or a pool!) Whether just for yourself or a group, we have you covered.
To keep the benches nice and clean when using your sauna, we recommend sitting on a towel, not directly on the wood.
Using seat covers can also be a great way to keep your benches clean and comfortable for sitting!
Things to Avoid:
- Sitting on the benches with wet swimsuits, as water and chlorine from them will damage the bench.
- Only throw water on the heater, not on the walls or benches, to protect the wood from excess moisture.
After Use
Wipe down the bench with a clean, damp cloth. Allow surfaces to dry thoroughly after, ensuring the room is well-ventilated. If possible, lift the benches to improve drying. We recommend leaving the heater on for at least half an hour with the air vent open and the door and windows closed.
Things to Avoid:
- Do not use running water, and be sure no excess water pools on the wood.
- Do not dry items—especially textiles—in the sauna, as excess moisture may damage the wood.
At least once a year for moderate use, or more often with intensive sauna use.
To ensure the longevity of your sauna, clean all of the surfaces of your sauna with gentle cleaning agents designed specifically for saunas. Wipe all surfaces including seating areas, walls, and ceilings with a soft brush or cloth. Then, apply a specialized cleaner and allow surfaces to completely dry.
Avoid using harsh cleaning products like bleach, and never use a pressure washer or running water when cleaning your sauna interior, as excessive moisture can permanently damage the structure and surface of the wood.
Reapply heat-resistant wax, such as our Supi Saunavaha wax, annually or more often depending on sauna usage. Apply this treatment before the first use to protect the wood and refresh it each year.
Check any fastenings on the benches and supports, tightening the screws if necessary. These may become loose over time as the changes in heat and humidity make the wood swell and shrink.
Regularly inspect and clean your heater and stones, removing dust and debris as needed. Replace stones periodically for optimal performance, and check electrical components for wear or damage. Dispose of old stones responsibly by returning them to nature.
Pro Tip! You can place them in your backyard, rather than sending them to a landfill.
When to replace sauna stones:
Never check the stones of your heater while it is in use.
- Stones that are chipped or broken into pieces.
- Stones that break or chip easily upon contact with another stone.
- If you heat a sauna once a week, stones should be replaced every two years
- If you sauna twice a week, stones should be replaced every year.
Also, make a habit of inspecting and cleaning your sauna accessories—thermometers, ladles, and buckets—to keep them functioning well.
While maintenance needs vary based on usage and application, following these simple guidelines based on your needs will help keep your sauna in peak condition for years to come.
