Project Spotlight: Ignite by Thermory Helps Set the Stage at Chef Masaharu Morimoto’s Restaurant

Some spaces tell their story before you ever take a seat.

At OEN Omakase by Morimoto, every detail has been carefully considered to create an experience that unfolds from the moment guests arrive. Known for blending traditional Japanese techniques with unexpected culinary innovation, Chef Morimoto and CORALS Design & Development envisioned a restaurant where steak and sushi exist as one seamless dining experience. The design follows that same philosophy—balancing authenticity with surprise.

One of the most memorable moments happens before the first course is ever served.

Guests entering the exclusive 12-seat omakase experience leave the energy of the main dining room behind as they pass through an entrance clad in Ignite by Thermory. The charred wood aesthetic continues into a dimly lit corridor, creating a quiet transition that prepares guests for the intimate experience ahead. It’s a subtle design move, but one that transforms the atmosphere and builds anticipation long before the chef begins his performance.

Inspired by the centuries-old Japanese tradition of shou sugi ban (yakisugi), Ignite captures the timeless beauty of charred wood while delivering the consistency and performance today’s commercial projects demand. Rather than relying on an open flame, Thermory uses an innovative embossing process combined with thermal modification to recreate the rich texture and appearance of traditionally charred wood.

The result is a cladding material that offers the distinctive look designers love, along with the enhanced durability, stability, and reliability that thermally modified wood is known for.

At OEN Omakase by Morimoto Ignite does more than frame an entrance—it helps tell the story. The dramatic black cladding establishes a sense of mystery and craftsmanship that perfectly complements the restaurant’s thoughtful progression from steakhouse to lounge to omakase bar.

Projects like this demonstrate how the right materials can become part of the experience itself. Ignite honors the visual heritage of traditional Japanese craftsmanship while providing a modern, dependable solution for architects and designers looking to create unforgettable spaces.
