A Bright Light in Las Vegas Design: Modern Landscape

When it comes to creating outdoor spaces that tell a story, few companies do it as well as Modern Landscape in Las Vegas.

Since 2004, this family-owned business has been transforming ordinary backyards into extraordinary oases, combining traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology to bring clients’ visions to life. Lead estimator and consultant John Hoff and his team are passionate about creating landscapes that not only look beautiful but also function as inviting spaces for families to gather, relax, and make memories. One key ingredient in their designs? Thermory wood.

“We’re big fans of Thermory,” says Hoff, whose team has incorporated our wood into countless projects throughout the Las Vegas area. “Thermory has allowed us to create stunning, long-lasting designs that stand up to the harsh desert climate while adding a touch of warmth and elegance that makes every space feel like home.”

Modern Landscape’s commitment to excellence is evident in every project they take on. The company’s personalized approach ensures that each client’s vision is fully understood and brought to life. Hoff and his team are known for taking the time to listen to each client, ensuring they craft a landscape that is both functional and beautiful.

Why Thermory?

The Las Vegas desert can be unforgiving, but Thermory wood has proven to be the perfect material to withstand the intense heat and dry conditions. Hoff’s inspiration for using wood cladding came from a trip to Southern California, where he was captivated by the modern look of wood accents against concrete at a local mall. He recognized the potential for using this design element in his own work to soften the often harsh, utilitarian feel of block walls found in many local homes.

“Thermory wood’s durability and natural aesthetic make it an excellent choice for our clients,” Hoff shares. “It’s more than just a practical solution; it’s a way to elevate the beauty and character of an outdoor space.”

Transformative Designs: Before & After

Throughout their years in business, Modern Landscape has consistently found new and innovative ways to incorporate Thermory wood into their projects. One notable example is how the team tackled a backyard with unsightly cinder block walls of varying heights.

Hoff says, “Cinder block walls are a common sight in many Las Vegas homes, but they aren’t the most attractive feature in a yard. In one particular project, the backyard wall had varied heights, which presented a unique challenge. We used Thermory Benchmark Ash cladding to section off parts of the wall, creating a more visually appealing and cohesive look. The transformation was striking. The result was a wall that not only served its purpose but also became a focal point of the yard.”

Another standout project involved creating a stylish privacy wall for a client’s front yard. Hoff notes, “One of my favorite Thermory applications was this privacy wall we built for our client. She not only wanted privacy in her small space near the front door, but she wanted it to look modern, stylish, and unlike anything anyone else has seen. Using Thermory Benchmark Ash cladding, we crafted this custom breeze wall with a corten steel planter at the base. This wall added a unique architectural element to the space, allowing for airflow while still maintaining a sense of enclosure.”

Innovative Design Meets Versatility

From poolside sundecks to courtyard transformations, Thermory wood has become an essential material in Modern Landscape’s toolbox. Hoff explains how Thermory Benchmark Pine was used to craft a luxurious sun deck that stood up to the intense Las Vegas sun while providing the perfect space for relaxation:

“The natural grain of the wood added warmth to the space, and its durability ensures it will stand up to the wear and tear of regular use. The deck became a perfect spot for our customer to relax by the pool, adding a luxurious feel to their backyard.”

In another project, Thermory Kodiak Spruce was used to soften the harsh look of a long, bare side wall. “Long, bare walls can be an eyesore in any yard,” Hoff shares. “The wood cladding broke up the monotony of the wall, adding texture and visual interest.” The transformation was so remarkable that it turned a once-dull space into a striking feature of the yard.

Perhaps one of the most unique uses of Thermory wood came in a minimalist yard design, where Hoff’s team used our Benchmark Pine to create a bold focal point:

“In a minimalist yard, every detail counts. We used Benchmark Pine along a wall to create a focal point. The natural wood grain added warmth and character to the otherwise simple design, drawing the eye and making the yard feel complete.”

Lighting Up Outdoor Spaces

One of the standout features in many of Modern Landscape’s projects is the integration of lighting into their designs. Hoff explains, “In one project, we used integrated lighting to bring out the beauty of the Thermory Benchmark Ash cladding in a client’s outdoor dining area. The before and after are stunning! The lighting not only highlighted the beauty of the wood but also made the space very attractive at night. It transformed the dining area into a cozy, intimate space perfect for entertaining guests or enjoying a family meal outdoors.”

An Ideal Collaboration

“Thermory has elevated our designs and helped us deliver lasting beauty and functionality to our clients,” Hoff concludes. “It’s a material that exceeds expectations in every way.”
